The Cherry Blossom Festival

                 By Chris Hernandez

The Northern California Cherry Blossom

Festival celebrated its 40th year. The Festival

is one of California’s most prominent celebrations of Asian traditions. Every year, over 150,000 people attend this dazzling display showcasing the grace and color

of the Japanese American Community. The Street Fair included a traditional Japanese cuisine and cooking demonstrations. Also. am arts and craft fair, and a children’s village.  It’s really fun when you go to it. I had a really good time when I went with all my friends. We did everything there like eat, playeda round, and made really funny jokes. The Festival was a blast and I can’t wait for next year.

2008 Olympic Site

By: Joann Kuang

Yes, yes......I know many of you are familiar with the Olympics.  There are those of you who are very excited about it, and those who just don’t care.  It is a very famous international multi-sport event.  Anyway, did you know that:

The Olympics started back in the old days in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC, but some scholars believed that it dates between as early as 884 BC and as late as 704 BC. and ended in 393 AD.  It was revived in 1896  bv French noblemen, Pierre Fredy Baron de Coubertin, who researched the reasons for the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871).  His reasons were that the French had not received proper physical education, and he wanted to have the youth of the world compete in sports rather than fight in war.

The first Modern Olympic Game took place in 1896 in Athens with less than 250 athletes, but it was the largest international sports event ever held until that time.  During the ancient times, competitors were usually naked because of the weather and the festival was to honor the human body.

An olive leaf crown was presented to the first place winner.  The olive branch is a sign of hope and peace.

It was outlawed in 393 AD by the emperor Theodosius I when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, and the Games were seen as a pagan festival and in discord with Christian ethics.

Currently, there are 203 countries participating in the Olympics.  The Olympic Rings represent the unity of five continents (the Americas are considered to be one), and the five colors were chosen because each nation had at least one of these colors in its national flag.  The Olympic Flame is lit in Olympia and brought to the host city by runners carrying the torch in relay.

The Summer and Winter Olympics are both held every four years, but after 1992, they have been celebrated two years apart.  As you may know, the most recent Summer Olympic are the 2004 Games in Athens, and the most recent Winter Olympics were the 2006 Games in Turin.  The 2006 Winter Olympics included 84 events and 7 sports.

The upcoming 2008 games will be in Beijing, China.  It will host 302 events in 28 sports.  Since it is going to occur next year, there is still some information that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Text Box: The rectangle is the National Aquatics Center, and the round one is the National Stadium in Beijing.                One thing we know about is that the tickets for the opening and the closing ceremony are on sale.  Overall, about nine million tickets will be generated, but a certain amount is for the International Olympic Committee, sponsors, dignitaries and TV broadcasters, so there are about seven million tickets on sale.  Also, a one-ticket only policy was announced for the two most popular events, which would be the opening and the closing ceremony.  This means that one person can only get one ticket.  Tickets from other “high demand sessions” will be limited to two tickets per person.  The prices for the opening ceremony, which will be held on Aug. 8, will cost between C$737 to C$30 (5,000 yuan to 200 yuan).  For the closing ceremony, it will be between C$442 to C$22 (3,000 yuan to 150 yuan).  About 58% of all the tickets will cost C$15 (100 yuan) or less, in order to be affordable to average Chinese citizens.

As I have mentioned earlier, there is still info that hasn’t been confirmed or released yet.  But there is one cool thing that was released though.  Check out the pics from the handout from the Beijing Organizing committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, and see for yourself!

We Know What You Did Last Summer

                                        Melon&Goobers

Okay, maybe we don’t, but we do have some guesses. Sitting on the couch, watching T.V., eating a bunch of junk food? Sleeping in until 3 p.m.? Staying on the computer all day, playing video games, laying in bed all day? Any of that sound familiar? It’s okay to do once a week, but you do need to get outside more. Go to the beach with some friends (with permission from the parents), join a summer sports league, anything to get out of the house. Enjoy your childhood while you have it.

You might’ve noticed that we said sleeping in until 3 p.m. It’s okay to sleep in a bit, but if you sleep in that late, your day is wasted and it’ll . Wake up around 10 or 11 (you’ll still get a couple more hours of sleep) and call some friends to go out somewhere. All you 8th graders out there spend as much time with your friends as you can. Some will be going to different high schools and you might not see them for a while.

Working Replica of Noah's Ark Opens

- The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was thrown open Saturday - you could say it was the first time in 4,000 years - drawing a crowd of curious pilgrims and townsfolk to behold the wonder.

Of course, it's only a replica of the biblical
Ark, built by Dutch creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.

Reckoning by the old biblical measurements, Johan's fully functional ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.

Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold.

"The design is by my wife, Bianca," Huibers said. "She didn't really want me to do this at all, but she said if you're going to anyway, it should look like this."

A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine - biblical scholars debate exactly what the wood used by Noah would have been.

Huibers did the work mostly with his own hands, using modern tools and occasional help from his son Roy. Construction began in May 2005

On the uncovered top deck - not quite ready in time for the opening - will come a petting zoo, with baby lambs and chickens, and goats. And one camel. Visitors on the first day were stunned.   "It's past comprehension," said Mary Louise Starosciak, who happened to be bicycling by with her husband while on vacation when they saw the ark looming over the local landscape.

"I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big."

In fact, Noah's Ark as described in the Bible was five times larger than Johan's Ark.

But that still leaves enough space near the keel for a 50-seat film theater, where kids can watch the segment of the Disney film "Fantasia" that tells the story of Noah.

Another exhibit shows water cascading down on a model of the Ark. Exhibits on the third level show ancient tools and old-fashioned barrels, exotic stuffed animals, and a wax model of an exhausted Noah reclining on a bed in the forecastle.

Genesis says Noah kept seven pairs of most domesticated animals and one breeding pair of all other creatures, plus his wife, three sons and three daughters-in-law together on the boat for almost a year while the world was deluged.

Perhaps it was only logical that the replica project would be the brainchild of a Dutchman: fear of floods are ingrained in the country's collective consciousness by its water-drenched history.

Lois Poppema, visiting from
California, said she thought the Netherlands was exactly the right place for an ark.  Just a few weeks ago we saw Al Gore on television .. saying that all Holland will be flooded" due to rising sea levels, she said.

"I don't think the man who made this ever expected that global warning will become (such an important) issue - and suddenly having the ark would be meaningful in the middle of
Holland."

Under sunny clear skies Saturday, Huibers said he wasn't worried about another biblical flood, since according to Genesis, the rainbow is the sign of God's promise never to flood the world again. But he does worry that recent events such as the flooding of
New Orleans could be seen as a portent of the end of time.

Huibers said he hopes the project will renew interest in Christianity in the
Netherlands, where churchgoing has fallen dramatically in the past 50 years. He also plans to visit major cities in Belgium and Germany

Too Less or Too Much?!

By: Joann Kuang

Text Box:

Water!  What do you think of when you hear that?  Water is a very important resource.  It is part of our everyday life.  It is also what everybody needs.  Basically without it, we may not survive.

Currently, a very serious water shortage is occurring in Tampa, Florida.  Even a recent rainfall was no help.  The water flow in the Hillsborough River, Tampa’s main water source, is below normal levels.

Because of this, people are hoping to be able to ensure an adequate supply until the rainy season by conserving water and limit outdoor use to the absolute minimum.  Since more than 50% of all the water used in homes is applied to landscaping, irrigation systems should be maintained to ensure water efficiency and prevent wasteful practices.  Monitoring, adjusting, and repairing irrigation equipment includes resetting the automatic controller, flushing the filters, checking for leaks or broken heads, and testing the rain sensor device.  There were restrictions in order to save water.  One of them was that automatic lawn sprinkler systems purchased and installed after May 1, 1991, are required to have a properly functioning rain sensor device or switch.  Rain sensors are designed to interrupt the cycle of the controller when a specific amount of rainfall has occurred.  Another one would be that the addresses ending in an even number or the letters A-M may water on Tuesday only.  Addresses ending in an odd number or the letters N-Z may water on Sundays only.  Watering on the designated day is allowed between midnight and 8a.m. or 6p.m. and midnight.  More can be found online.  Just in case the next one will be us, please save water, and don’t waste them.  Don’t just think about saving water for the fishes, thinking about saving water for yourself and us!

Florida is experiencing water trouble, but up in the north, there is also water trouble.  This time, it was not water shortage, but a big flood.  A fierce spring stretched from Florida to Maine that drenched the New York City area, causing a heavy flood that canceled school.  It forced people to evacuate and slowed the soggy morning commute.  The storm that made this possible was really bad that public schools were closed on Monday, cars were stuck, several major roads were shut down, flights were grounded, trains were temporarily shut down, power outages occurred in more than 10,000 households, some residents were forced to take to the streets in boats, etc.  It was so harsh that two communities had to declare states of emergency  What it also caused was that it defeated the more than 100 years old record that happened on April 15, 1906.  During that time, about 1.8 inches of rain fell in Central Park.  The new record that occurred on Sunday (April 15) was that more than 5.5 inches of rain fell in the New York region.  This record-setting rain began falling Sunday night and continued into Monday morning.  It sure would be great if Florida and New York can split up their trouble, and share it with each other.  That way, it can be neutralized.

Frac/tion vs. Deci.mal

By: J.K. (Not Rowling)

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear those two terms?  Probably, for many of you, it would be “math,” or something related to it.  But probably not many of you would think of science first.  As we all know, in science we also need math, fraction, and decimal.  Believe it or not, this was how a conflict was started.

It is amazing how a small little dot and a small little bar can cause a debate between a math teacher and a science teacher.  Why was there a debate?  You see, the math teacher wants the students to write their answers in a fraction, while the science teacher wants the students to use decimal.

It all started when the science teacher told the class that they can only use decimal, and if they don’t do that, they will lose points.  Like what many average students would do, there were complaints, and that was when the math teacher’s name came in, and the battle began.  The debate didn’t last very long though.  The innocent students were acting as owls, sending the words of each “fighter.”  The science teacher fought for decimal by using words like “no one uses fractions anymore,” “Yes, stocks’ cost once used fractions, but not anymore, they use decimal,” “the only people who use fractions are mathematicians, who need a life,” and more.  The math teacher defended fraction with words like “fractions are important, it can be useful in the future, like taking math or calculus in high school,” and more.  Just to let you know, these words are not word for word, and are probably not the only words that were said.  Both teachers agree with each other, but they still stick to what they believed in.  So in the end, the debate ended when the teacher decides that they should stick to whatever they chooses, and bother each other no more.  Are you wondering if this will continue, or did the teachers ever fight face to face?  I can tell you that this would remain as a mystery.  Also, if you will have/have these two teachers, or any other teachers who are very similar to this, you must choose the right direction, or things will turn ugly, you’ve been warned.

Psychic Squirrels

by Simon Wu

Go to fullsize image

Can red squirrels predict the future? No, but scientists say they can predict when spruce trees will grow a bumper crop of their favorite food--spruce seeds.

Stan Boutin, a biologist at Canada's University of Alberta, and fellow researchers discovered the squirrels' seemingly psychic abilities when they noticed a jump in the number of squirrel babies born in certain years. The squirrels normally give birth to one litter of babies in the spring. But in some years, they would give birth to a second litter. Adding kids to the family occurred only before summers when trees produced a greater than normal number of cones full of edible seeds.

Boutin thinks some thing in the taste or look of spruce trees' budding cones may give the squirrels a hint about the upcoming number of seeds. The baby boom occurs to take advantage of the extra food.

Another Drought in San Fran?

Jefferson Phan & Henry Pan

On April 11, 2007, the Bay area has received its call that they thought they will never hear again in 20 years. We are officially in drought. Why? The rain hasn’t been hitting us like last year, which hit highs, and now, some of are Bay Area reservoirs are either below normal or at way below capacity. The San Francisco Water Department is now calling for voluntary water conservation, as in San Mateo County.

Health

            Alex Kozakiewicz and Simon Wu

Despite studies saying North Americans are getting fatter every year, people are obsessed with weight loss, and the business of losing weight has ballooned into a $46.3 billion industry. How much would you be willing to spend to lose 30 pounds?

There is no shortage of options when it comes to weight-loss programs. The key is finding a program that fits your lifestyle and budget. Of course, you could always go the old-fashioned route, reducing calories and increasing exercise, but many dieters need added structure and support, not to mention the accountability (there's nothing like a little public humiliation to keep you motivated) that accompanies an organized program.

But paying someone to keep you on the straight and narrow isn't cheap. Remember, the phrase "caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware) was practically coined for the diet industry. Do your homework and remember that there are no shortcuts or magic shakes or bars that will to be your ticket to Slimville.

Here's a quick look at a handful of popular programs and the costs involved.

1. Jenny Craig
2. L A Weight Loss
3. NutriSystem
4. Weight Watchers
5. The Zone Diet

Jenny Craig
The weight loss brand recently marketed by spokeswoman Kirstie Alley boasts a sensible approach to weight loss, advocating an average drop in body mass of about 1 percent, or one to two pounds per week. The program addresses mind-body aspects of weight loss by helping clients adopt healthy eating and exercise habits, as well as encouraging them to examine the underlying causes of their weight problem.

Clients can choose from three membership levels with staggered sign-up costs: Jenny TuneUp, $49, for those who have less than 10 pounds to lose; Jenny OnTrack, $199, a six-month program; and Jenny Rewards, $399 or $358, a 12-month program that rewards dieters efforts and weight loss with discounts on food. There's also an At Home option which is similar to the in-store options except you also pay for shipping and have consultations over the phone.

Sign-up costs include weekly one-on-one counseling, personalized menus, motivational plans and assorted manuals and guides, depending on your membership level. Then, there's the cost of food. The prepackaged foods generally cost $11 to $17 per day, or $77 to $119 per week.

Total cost: $49, $199 and $399 with a payment plan or $358 upfront, not including food

May/June Horoscopes

AriesMarch 21st – April 19th

You make an exciting discovery around the 17th. You could uncover a resource you never knew you had, an old flame may reappear, or a secret could be revealed. Romantic flare-ups or blurred boundaries between friendship and romance are likely around the 20th. Your school life really picks up speed this month. There are battles along the way, but if you apply your energy steadily you come out a winner in the end. Be careful not to treat your enemies like losers! Your enthusiasm to get it done may be misunderstood.

Taurus April 20th – May 20th

You are enthusiastic, even a little bold, this month. Whether it’s big or small, you are ready for an adventure. An exciting new friendship or alliance is likely around the 27th. Watch for tensions with a friend around the 19th, jealousy may raise its ugly head and cause some friction. It’s a good month for homework, although some projects are possible in the second half of the month, and confusion could reign on the 8th. As well, credit for all of your efforts may not be realized until a later date.

Gemini May 21st – June 21st

Starting on a brand new course of action in your life path is favored in the first week of the month. A new discovery or a chance meeting with an influential person may pave the way to better working conditions. There could be some disappointing news regarding projects mid-month, which may leave you feeling tense. The second half of February could be riddled with minor challenges; projects are put on hold, and you might be feeling misunderstood. Problems encountered now will be ironed out in March, so try not to sweat the small stuff.

Cancer June 22nd – July 22nd

You or your friend may be treating your relationship like it’s a competition this month. Try to channel excess energy into shared activities instead of squabbling. Unusual or unclear circumstances surrounding school this month call up the need to buckle down and get real about your saved up money. Not reading the fine print in class work this month could be a real mistake. It’s not a good month to lend anyone money, as you are unlikely to get it back any time soon! Pleasant news from afar, or about long-distance trips, arrives around the 17th.

Leo July 23rd – August 22nd

You are likely to run the whole bunch of emotions this month. You have the potential to want to run before you can walk when it comes to taking on more work or projects. Don’t accept responsibility for more than you can handle. You have enough on your plate. You’d prefer things were more clear and straightforward with a friend, and they’re nothing of the sort! A new revelation on the 17th will help keep things fresh, and the 26th offers a chance to break the routine with a little fun.

Virgo August 23rd – September 22nd

New developments and surprises revolving around a friendship are in store in February, but watch for the tendency towards communication breakdowns in the second half of the month. Focus on the meaning behind a friend’s words instead of harping on how they’re expressing themselves. Confusing circumstances at school, and a feeling of being in over your head with daily chores could leave you feeling guilty. Cut yourself some slack. Do what you have to do and nothing more. Enjoy some healthy recreation and break away from the routine.

Libra September 23rd – October 22nd

Confusing circumstances surrounding romance and friendship are likely around the 8-10. Others may be vying for your attention, and you could be torn deciding who to give what! Unexpected developments at school occur around the same time. A new course of action is in order, and it feels refreshing. Better conditions are in sight. Channel some of the tension you feel on the home front into productive work around the house. Otherwise, you’ll be itching to get away and unfinished domestic chores will only add to your stress.

Scorpio  October 23rd – November 21st

Although your heart is with your home now, developments at school could conflict with your personal plans around the 10th. A romantic attraction or an unexpected chance to have a great time invigorates you around the 7th. Watch your pocketbook--you could be feeling so good that you temporarily forget that there will be bills to pay next month! This is an excellent time to work on your goals with more passion. There isn’t a project or task that you can’t master in February.

Sagittarius  November 22nd – December 21st

You are looking at the world straight in the eye this year. You are more of a free agent this month, and you are likely to come up with more ideas and plans than you can count. A change of scene at the beginning of the month may be in order. Good news on the home front, about friends or family members, arrives around the 7th. Although risk-taking attracts now, you should probably take it easy for the time being. Draw on your enormous creativity to improve your finances instead.

Capricorn  December 22nd – January 19th

You are filled with energy to move your plans forward. If you have to stand your ground and assert yourself, you do so without thinking twice. This is an enterprising month for you. You want to leave your mark on the world in some way--however big or small--and you are in the position to do just that. Still, some personal issues arise that could have you scratching your head. If something doesn’t feel right, skip it. Although it’s a strong month for personal initiatives, finances are potentially confusing, especially from the 8-10th.

Aquarius January 20th – February 18th

Income from odd jobs is likely to improve this month, perhaps in surprising ways. As progressive as you are, problems from the past occupy your thoughts, and tying up loose ends is in order. Demands from a friendship or close personal relationship become more pressing around the 2nd and come to a head on the 10th. Your recent lack of motivation could be the topic. However, your energy levels increase towards the end of February and into March.

Pisces February 19th – March 20th

Others are definitely taking notice of you this month. Some are finding you delightfully quirky. However, others could misinterpret your intentions and find your displays of independence a little alarming. You’re no stranger to giving off mixed signals, but this month it could get you into complicated situations. Any attempts to stereotype you will surely fail--this month you‘re “trying on“ new looks and ways of expressing yourself. Some challenges at school are possible, particularly around the 10th. Your mind is wandering, but now is not a good time to slack off.

DEAR ADVICE WIZ, TYRA, DR. PHYL!

Dear Advice Peeps:,

I have a crush on this boy a year older than me.  He knows I exist, but we don’t say hi.  He just gives me this stare that isn’t good or bad.  I don’t know what to do.  I’m too shy to give him hints, or even tell him.  My friend wants me to tell him, but I don’t want to. SOS.

-         Now What?

Dear Now What,

I think it is time for you to confess to him.  Tell him before it’s too late.  I know you’re shy, but try and think about it.  Is he nice, sweet, and sociable?  If so, then I guess you can try and say hi to him. Try to say hi to him in a nice way, then give him a letter that shows how much you feel.  Giving letters to a boy would be really sweet.

            With Love,

            Advice Wizard

Dear Advice Wizard,

There’s a guy that is a cheater and he says he truly loves me! I’m not sure if I should take a chance and ask him out! Please help me!

-         Loved, but Not Lovin’

Dear Loved, but Not Lovin’,

Wow, a cheater?  Did he ever done anything for you?  If he doesn’t, then he might be playing you.  If you have feelings with him, then you should.  Teenage love doesn’t last my friend, but you can give it a try. Remember, once a cheater, always a cheater.  But many can be either forgiven, changed, or staying the same.

            Sincerely,

            Advice Wizard

Blades of Glory Review

By Billy Guan

I’d like to ask a question.  Have you seen Blades of Glory yet?  If not, you have absolutely no idea what you’re missing.  I saw it about a week ago and it was just hilarious.  Having the casting of Will Ferrell as the drunk figure skating star Chazz Michael Michaels, and John Heder as the oddly feminine Jimmy MacElroy was pure genius.  Their acting styles fit their roles so well it’s almost creepy.

The story goes that there are two competitive figures who get banned when they get in a fight after tying for the gold… and setting some guy in a funny outfit on fire (hahaha…).  After doing terrible in their new lives without figure skating, one of Jimmy’s worshipping fans discovers a loophole, and tells him that they were only banned from the singles in competitive skating, not from the pairs.  Jimmy goes looking for a partner to compete, he finds Chazz Michael Michaels instead and ingage in yet another fight.  After finally agreeing to work together, they start practicing for the competition.  The first challenge for Chazz, to lose the wonder gut.

I think I’ve ruined enough of the movie for you guys so I guess I’ll let you guys find out the rest of it in the theatres.  Hope this review

Disturbia

DreamWorks Pictures' Disturbia  In DreamWorks Picture' new suspense thriller "Disturbia," the quieter the street, the darker the secrets. Kale (Shia LaBeouf) has a life most teenagers would envy. He spends his days endlessly playing video games, surfing the net, eating junk food and watching cable. He has complete free reign of the house. There's only one problem, he's not allowed to leave the house. Kale's under court-ordered house arrest for three months, and if he takes one step beyond a 100-foot perimeter of the house, his next confinement will be in a real prison. Life hasn't always been like this for him. A year ago, Kale and his mom (Carrie-Anne Moss) and dad were a happy family. Then his father was killed in a car accident, for which Kale feels somewhat responsible. The trauma has had long-lasting psychological effects. The once outgoing young man is now shut down and withdrawn. When an insensitive teacher brings up his father, Kale loses it and punches him out. Only the intercession of his mother kept him out of jail. Now he's going stir crazy in his own house.  As the walls start to close in, Kale starts to notice the world outside. With some secondhand surveillance equipment he begins spying on his neighbors, most prominently Ashley, who soon catches on to him. To his surprise however, she becomes interested in his stakeout hobby. What starts out as a game turns deadly serious when Kale and Ashley begin to suspect that one of their neighbors may be an elusive serial killer. But who's going to believe them? It may just be their overactive imagination. Or they may have stumbled across a secret that might cost them their lives! So go check out this PG-13 rated movie! J

The Invisible

Now in limbo, not quite dead but invisible to the living, his spirit can only watch as his mother (Academy Award® winner Marcia Gay Harden) and the police search frantically for him, unaware that he is only hours away from truly perishing. Go watch this mysterious PG-13 rated movie and see if you can solve this mystery.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are allied with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in a desperate quest to free Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from his mind-bending trap in Davy Jones' locker, while the terrifying ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones, under the control of the East India Trading Company, wreaks chaos across the Seven Seas. Navigating through treachery, betrayal and wild waters, they must forge their way to exotic Singapore and confront the cunning Chinese Pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Now headed beyond the very ends of the earth, each must ultimately choose a side in a final, titanic battle, as not only their lives and fortunes, but the entire future of the freedom-loving Pirate way, hangs in the balance. The pirates are back! BEWAAARE!  This may be the last one so don’t miss this PG-13 movie.

Wildfire Damages Beverly Hills Homes L

By: Judy Tang & Monika Murillo & Joann Kuang

Wildfire damages Beverly Hills homesFires erupted in the hills above Los Angeles damaging or destroying several homes as dangerous north winds fueled the flames. Farther inland, a blinding sandstorm triggered a deadly highway pileup. Wind speeds of more than 50 mph propelled the flames in grass near expensive mountainside homes above the city of Beverly Hills, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said.  About 200 firefighters, some using water-dropping helicopters, contained the blaze to 15 acres, or less than a square mile, in the Beverly Glen neighborhood on the south face of the Santa Monica Mountains.  Interim Los Angeles Fire Chief Douglas Barry said homes were damaged by flames. ”The fire broke out after powerful winds toppled power lines, igniting brush behind a residence,” said Ron Myers, a fire department spokesman.  Daphna Ziman was getting ready for a Hillary Clinton fundraiser at her Woodland Drive home when there was suddenly smoke everywhere. Police came to the door and told her to evacuate.  "It was black outside, you couldn't walk through it, I've never seen anything like it," she said. Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said late Tuesday the fire was essentially contained, but firefighters were still working because of hotspots and concern that winds could fan ashes into flames. “Smaller fires burned elsewhere in Southern California, including a 15- to 20-acre blaze in Palmdale, a desert city in northern Los Angeles County. Homes were threatened for a time before most of the active flames were knocked down,” county fire Inspector Sam Padilla said.  Fires caused power outages for more than 190,000 customers in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas and utility officials did not know when service would be restored. Commuters heading east out of Los Angeles found traffic jumbled by blacked-out signals and streets messy with fallen palm fronds. Southern California is extremely fire-prone after a dry winter. Downtown Los Angeles has recorded less than 2½ inches of rain since July 1.  In the inland region east of Los Angeles, 50 mph winds created sandstorms across San Bernardino County's desert roadways.  “A morning pileup on Interstate 40 killed two people and injured several others near Barstow during zero-visibility conditions,” authorities said.  "It almost looks like fog right now, and it just surrounds hundreds of square miles," said California Highway Patrol Lt. Todd Sturges.  “High winds at Los Angeles International Airport forced jets to make second approaches, while others chose to reroute to LA/Ontario International Airport,” Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said

Team Fortress 2 Preview

By Billy Guan

I don’t know if any of you guys have ever played the first Team Fortress but if you have, you’ll know that it was pretty fun.  This sequel will include the same character classes which are Demoman (a guy with all kinds of explosives), Engineer (armed with a wrench, shotgun, and creativity), Spy (carries around a revolver), Heavy (muscular dude with a gatling gun), Pyro (uses a cool flame thrower), Scout (quick on his feet and armed with a bat), Medic (self-explanatory), Sniper (also self-explanatory), and Soldier (a short guy in a military uniform armed with a rocket launcher).  Each class plays an important role and teamwork proves to be essential.  Many changes have been made to all the abilities of each class which includes the removal of concussion grenade jumping and grenades (except for the Demoman).

The release of this game will occur somewhere in late 2007.  During the July 2006 Electronic Arts press conference, Valve revealed that Team Fortress 2 would have a cartoon-like feel to it.  Well, I don’t know about you guys but I can’t wait until it is released.

Are Video Games good for your eyes?

by Jefferson Phan and Henry Pan

Did you know that playing video games for an hour or so may be good for your eyes? A study conducted by Yale showed that playing video games for an hour or so may be good for your eyes, except right before bedtime. Playing video games right before bedtime may mess up your ‘biological clock’ and may not improve your eyesight.

What Did I Think of the Show?

By Arianna Chau

I thought the show was very well planned and very organized. The show was very

enjoyable and funny. I thought it was very cool how they made the lights flash on stage. The chorus and the orchestra sounded really great, especially when they added to the background noise. It seemed like the audience enjoyed the show too. It was very cool when

You guys made it seem like you guys chopped off the Mat Hatter’s head even though you just put some red liquid on the axe. This play reminded me how the show goes, because I watched this show 3 years ago. I’m glad I was able to see this show.

SPORTS!

Will Barry Bonds beat Hank Aaron in the 2007-2008 season?

I took a poll of some classes in Presidio, and the percent came out ninety two percent yes, eight percent no. I believe that Barry Bonds will beat Hank Aaron, because Bary hit twenty six home runs last season and he only needs twenty home runs to tie Hank Aaron this season. However, the gossip surrounding Barry's use of steroids(performance enhancers)also puts him in deep suspicion about his 735 home runs. If you ask Hank Aaron himself, he believes that Barry is very capible of beating is record of 755 home runs. Hank also believes that if Barry was using steroids he would not take the home run record title.

TRACK TEAM

PMS champion track team (3 years in a row, thank you very much) is over 160 athletes strong!  That’s a lot of speed!  The team sits for a pep talk by Coach Norm regarding the meet against Rooftop on March 16th, at Washington HS.  4 schools competed at this event until 6:30 p.m!

The team gets ready for their 4th City Championship by running lengths after school.  Here’ runners take their mark.

City Championships will be at Kezar Stadium on April 30-May 4th.

Can the Goldenstate Warriors make it to the playoffs?

Many Warriors fans believe that the Warriors can go to  the playoffs. Especially because the  Warriors have had a healthy roster for about four months. The Warriors head coach Don Nelson has definitely made a difference in coaching the young Monta Ellis who has saved this Warriors team, and turned this group into a playoff worthy team. The newest members of the team Stephen Jackson, and Al Harrington have also contributed to the new and improved Warriors. The bad news is that the Warriors are only half a game ahead of Las Angeles Clippers. If the Warriors can finish this season well by winning their next four games, and the Clippers lose a couple games then they will definitely go to the playoffs. Unfortunately, if the Warriors go to the playoffs their first game would be against the Dallas Mavericks, who have highest winning percentages ever since the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan. The better news is that the Warriors have beaten the Mavericks every time they hace played agaist each other.

Jamba Juice’s Citrus Squeeze

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cup of fresh orange juice
  • 2/3 cup of frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana sliced
  • 2 scoops of vanilla nonfat yogurt
  • 1 cup of ice

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until all the ice is crushed and the drink is smooth.  This recipe yields one 24-ounce drink.

Cover tops of the cups with aluminum foil and insert a wooden-treat stick through the foil into the center of each cup. Freeze until firm, about 3 hours.
