Title:
The Richmond: Evolution of a Neighborhood from Dunes to Diversity
Begin:
2/10/2009 7:00 PM
End:
Description:
A San Francisco Museum and Historical Society event. John Freeman, a Richmond District native and historian, will highlight the early years of the Richmond, when visitors traveled beyond the Lone Mountain area cemeteries to get to the pleasures at the Pacific shore. Soon, race tracks and road houses would entice the sporting crowd to the area between the cemetery and the surf.
The fascinating story of how the scattered pioneers in the sand dunes organized and worked to develop this dynamic neighborhood will be shown and discussed by Freeman in a PowerPoint presentation.
Reception 7:00 PM to view many historic photos of the early years of this quintessential San Francisco neighborhood. Presentation at 7:30pm.
The program will be held in the auditorium of Star of the Sea School, a landmark of the neighborhood which celebrates its centennial in 2009. Program is free to current SFMHS members. A $5 donation is requested from non-members, which may be applied toward membership. See
